Amoussou over Rickels

Frenchman, Karl “Psycho” Amoussou (age 26), judo black belt and former undercover cop in France faced David Rickels (age 23) in a 170-pound match at Bellator 69 on May 18, 2012. Just for the record, Amoussou stole the “Sweet Submission” segment from Bellator commentator, Jimmy Smith–who loves coaching his ring girls, Mercedes and Jade. They demonstrated the scissor sweep.

A groin shot at the beginning of the first round stopped the fight. Of course, Amoussou needed time to recover, but worse, his cup strap broke as a result of the groin shot. Comedy ensued as discussion about ‘where can we get another cup? Get one from another fighter’ went back and forth with the ref and the Louisiana State Commission official. The cut man grabbed the hand wrap tape and wrapped Amoussou’s shorts.

After the slow start, fans were treated to sick judo throws from Amoussou. Good action back and forth, then an eye poke that momentarily closed Amoussou’s eye. Then, Rickels kicked Amoussou in the groin again. This was not an easy fight for the Frenchman. By the end of the fight, Amoussou’s face was puffed up on the left side with his eye almost swollen shut.

@JoshGrossESPN tweeted, “…Lucky he has time to prepare for Brian Baker. His face needs it.”

Split decision win to Amoussou–much to the surprise of Rickels who stood with his arm raised as the decision was read. Rickels thought he had done enough to win the fight and advance to the next level of the welterweight tournament, but that didn’t happen. Amoussou was gracious in defeat, acknowledging Rickels as a dangerous fighter and giving him much respect.
